As much as I love traveling to see well-known attractions, I also love discovering hole-in-the-wall types of places. I especially enjoy discovering lesser-known venues right here in Canberra, and my most recent fascination has been Campbell.
This lovely suburb is brimming with scenic marvels and sumptuous treats. It’s also got an interesting and captivating past. So whether you want to sightsee or your craving for a historically enriching day, Campbell can be your next destination.
And don’t worry if you’re not sure where to start, this guide can pave the way. Below is a taste of the most exciting things you can do in Campbell, Canberra.
Where is Campbell?
Campbell spans from the southeast area of Mount Pleasant Nature Reserve up to the base of Mount Ainslie. It’s a suburb in Canberra, which is by the northern end of Australia’s territory.

What to Do in Campbell
Visit the Australian War Memorial
– Media credit: holidaywonders
Campbell is actually home to the number one attraction in Canberra that people across the country and all over the world make a point to visit – the Australian War Memorial.
The memorial serves as an archive, a shrine, and a world-class museum in honor of the Australians who valiantly fought in the war. It has several areas based on their service: the aircraft hall, the First and Second World War galleries, and more.
They offer a range of guided tours that can take you through the different exhibits. Believe me when I say that one hour is not enough. Most people make multiple visits just to see everything.
Every day, they hold The Last Post Ceremony which is an incredibly poignant event. They pick a name from the Roll of Honour and share their story with the visitors.
The whole experience is moving and it’s definitely something you should do, especially because it’s free. You just have to book in advance to be guaranteed entry.
Look out from Mount Ainslie

The best way to see Canberra is definitely on top of Mount Ainslie. From its summit, you’ll be able to gaze at the city’s impressive geometric layout and a panoramic view of all of its most popular structures.
Half of the fun is going up there. For those who are up for a challenge, ditch the car and go hiking or cycling for a chance to breathe fresh Australian air.
Tourists would also be happy to know that wildlife is abundant here. With kangaroos pretty much being a symbol of Australia, among Mount Ainslie’s trails is where you can most likely lay eyes on one.
And of course, once you get to the top, taking the perfect photo with Canberra as the background is a must. To get the best snaps, make sure that you go during sunset so that you can capture that lovely golden hour hue.
Fish at Lake Burley Griffin
– Media credit: wearecbr
Although Lake Burley Griffin started as an artificial structure, the lake is now teeming with life. You’ll see people rowing, sailing, cruising, and naturally, fishing.
Local authorities actually support recreational fishing by releasing fingerlings regularly. You’ll be able to catch several species of fish here, including yellowfin, golden perch, car, and Murray cod.
You don’t even need a fishing license to participate. You can go there any time of year, as long as you have a boat permit for powered fishing boats.
However, there are some conditions to remember, such as releasing any endangered or protected species of fish. You also can’t use poisons or explosives when you’re there. And lastly, you can’t sell anything that you catch.
See part of the Anzac Parade
– Media credit: visitcanberra
The Anzac Parade is where people come to pay respects to all the Australian and New Zealand service people who participated in the war. It’s easily noticeable because of the red gravel lining the street.
This color actually comes from crushed-up Canberran house bricks. And as you make your way through, make sure to listen to the sound of your steps. They’re meant to reproduce the sound of military boots walking in a parade.
You’ll notice that the street is made up of plenty of memorials, which you’ll see on both sides. Some of these would be the Australian Hellenic Memorial, the Boer War Memorial, and the Australian Service Nurses National Memorial to name a few.
Each one of these memorials is awe-inspiring, not just because of what they stand for but also for their design. They all have a unique and interesting architecture that perfectly honors those that they commemorate.
Go canoeing at Molonglo Reach District Park
– Media credit: franke1958
Campbell is incredibly rich in natural scenery and Molonglo Reach is a stellar example. This lush area is an idyllic place for a serene getaway from all the commotion in the city.
Many paddlers use these waters for some thrill and excitement, and you can be amongst them. Although the water is fairly safe, sometimes it does experience stronger winds which is why recreational swimming is discouraged.
Still, it’s got plenty of wildlife along its riverbanks so being in the water is a great way to reconnect with nature and listen to its sounds.
The best time to go would be during the spring and autumn months when the trees start changing color. This is when the weather is most mild and temperatures are still pleasant.
Have a picnic at Remembrance Nature Park

As a suburb, Campbell has many spaces dedicated to fostering a sense of community. Remembrance Nature Park is one of them.
This small yet spacious park is a historic site bearing a special plaque. It was dedicated to the Aboriginal people who became part of the armed forces, as well as the November 11, 1918 signing of the Armistice.
Today, it gets a lot of sunlight and a cooling breeze that makes it ideal for small get-togethers. It also has an electric barbecue for public use, shaded seating, and free freshwater, making it a good place to hang out and enjoy a picnic.
And when you’re already full, burn off some calories by walking along the tree-lined trails.

Bring your kids to Victoria Cross Park
– Media credit: playgrounds_canberra
Victoria Cross houses a monument that celebrates the 96 Australian recipients of the prestigious Victoria Cross Award.
This award is given to civilians and members of the armed forces who showed acts of bravery for their country. Feats like self-sacrifice or saving companions during enemy fire would count as reasons behind earning this award.
As a way to encourage the community to visit, park authorities placed a playground for families. This way, kids can spend time having fun on various colorful playground equipment as their relatives chat and have a good time on the benches.
The area itself is surrounded by trees so it’s always cool there without being too chilly. They also installed a sunshade so that no one gets a sunburn throughout the day.
Watch a movie at The Pruneyard
